نمازِ جمعہ مکہ معظمہ میں فرض ہوچکی تھی؛ لیکن اس کی سب سے پہلے ادائیگی مدینہ منورہ میں آں حضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے حکم سے حضرت اسعد بن زرارہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمائی،اس پہلے جمعہ میں 40حضرات شریک تھے، پھر جب آں حضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہجرت فرماکر مدینہ منورہ تشریف لائے تو آپ نے پہلا جمعہ  "قبا" سے روانہ ہوکر محلہ بنو سالم بن عوف میں ادا فرمایا۔ جہاں بعد میں ایک مسجد بنادی گئی، جو "مسجدِ جمعہ" کے نام سے موسوم ہوئی
