The reason why transition metals form interstitial compounds is that the lattice of transition metals contains open spaces that can be filled with atoms

such as H, C, and N. Interstitial compounds are formed when Hydrogen, Carbon, and Nitrogen atoms become trapped inside the crystal lattice of metals.
