Explanation

Ostriches, like some other birds, eat pebbles and small stones to help with digestion. 

They swallow these pebbles, which then accumulate in their gizzard, a muscular organ in the digestive system.

The pebbles help grind up the food.

It especially tough plant material, in the gizzard, making it easier to digest.

This process is called "grit digestion".
