Explanation

The battery on a motherboard, often called a CMOS battery

CMOS battery:

Function: It powers the CMOS chip which stores critical system settings. 

What it stores: Date, time, boot sequence, hardware configurations, and sometimes passwords. 

What happens if it fails: If the battery dies, you will likely need to reset the BIOS settings when you turn on your computer, including setting the date and time again.
