Islamabad officially became the capital of Pakistan on 14 August 1967, under President Ayub Khan.

The city was constructed starting in 1960.

It is now the country's ninth-most populous city, with a population of over 1.2 million.

Before being named the capital, the area was known as Raj Shahi.
