- Shah Jahan's eldest son, the liberal Dara Shikoh, became regent in 1658, due to his father's contamination.[citation needed] Dara championed a syncretistic Hindu-Muslim subculture. With the assist of the Islamic orthodoxy, however, a more youthful son of Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb (reigned 1658–1707), seized the throne.
